From teeth whitening products to savoury ice cream flavours, charcoal has literally risen from the ashes and become the next IT thing in cosmetics. Leading the charcoal horse-race, Boscia Skin Care products are killing it with there legendary peel-off face masks and their complete line of charcoal inspired, preservative-free, self-care line. Before I go into my review of fave beauty-care products, first, let me tell you the the hows, whats and whys of charcoal.
First things first, there are two types of charcoal on the market; regular old charcoal and activated charcoal.Where charcoal is a black residue consisting of carbon and remaining ash from animal and vegetation substances (hopefully the later of the two), activated charcoal is a result of carbon that has been processed with heat that renders it less porous; making it ideal for absorption.
Where did the charcoal craze come from you might ask? Well, it all started with Mary Poppin’s chimney sweep.
Just kidding….But in all seriousness, the use of charcoal dates back to 1500 BC, whereby Egyptians found that charcoal could be used as a preservative for wet wood and embalming mummified corpses. After the development of charcoal activation in 1870-1920, activated charcoal began to make appearances in medical journals and by the end of the 20th century, was employed by all modern hospitals and clinics for a variety of applications (often poisoning or overdose).
Fast forward to the 21st century, and the beauty industry is now starting to capitalize on charcoal’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties as well! Ideal for targeting acne and oil, the theory behind activated charcoal is that it’ll act like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil in the skin. Here to fulfill all your beauty-care questions and ease your doubts on charcoal: I am going to share with you my top 3 go-to charcoal products!
1. NEW- Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser by Boscia
Made with activated black bamboo charcoal and tamarind seed gum, this cleanser is meant to absorb impurities in your pores and sooth and hydrate your skin. What truly defines this face cleanser ball is it’s gelatinous texture that allows it to be used as a solid spherical soap, all the while, maintaining the texture of a soft gel cleanser: Truly a one-of-a-kind product. The only thing that was kinda wonky with this experience is the way you need to poke it with a glamourized toothpick to release it from a latex cover, but I guess if it was for preserving the integrity of the product and keeping it from drying up, I’ll let it slide. In the end, the result it provided really proved a worthy purchase, I only used it a handful of times since, but I felt like the surface of my skin, especially the nose area, was a lot smoother and balanced.
2. Luminizing Face Mask by Boscia
This face mask does more than just make you look ominous! And before you ask: No, it isn’t like those videos where your blackheads stick to the rubbery layer when you peel it off. However, when I use it, I noticed a lot of skin flakes and surface dirt stick to the undersurface when removing it, which definitely helps your skin look more radiant. Some food for thought on this product: I’m not sure if it needs to be a peel-off mask and am torn on weather I would prefer it to be or not. Contrary to what people assume, I think it’s the rosemary leaf extract that acts as an antioxidant and produces a firming sensation, not from the peel glue.
3. Boom! Toothy Tabs by LUSH Cosmetics
Sure, you can go online and get a multiple of different bland charcoal toothpaste products, but I guarantee you, none of them will satisfy your tastebuds as much as this nifty treat; it taste like vanilla Cola! Brownie points for the fact that I also think you are getting more bank for your buck, considering the average product goes for between 20-80 CAD$$$ (not including shipping) and this one goes for only 9.95 CAD. Aside from charcoal and lime oil to brighten, LUSH’s toothy tabs are also made from gunpowder tea, which helps prevent tooth decay. Best for mornings full of coffee and nights with too much red wine, I have seen more of an immediate whitening effect rather than a gradual (I also haven’t measured my results so that’s something to look into for future I suppose).
